Vata, Pitta, Kapha – What type are you?
Vata, Pitta, Kapha – these may sound like some kind of password to some special club but they are Ayurvedic body types.
Each of us has a unique combination in our constitution of these three principles called “doshasâ€. Balancing the three doshas is important for health, happiness and longevity.
Here is a brief summary of each in turn:
VATA
Elements:
- Air
- Space
This governs all motion such as breathing, circulation, elimination and the flow of nerve impulses to and from the brain. The colon is the principal seat of Vata in the body. Qualities are that Vata leads the other doshas and is: dry, light, quick, cold, subtle, thin and rough. Body build is thin and lithe.
Most importantly Vata likes:
- Regular routine
- Early bedtime and lots of rest
- Warm cooked foods
- To be kept warm.
When in balance – Vata is vibrant, enthusiastic, energetic, clear minded and alert.
PITTA
Elements:
- Fire
- Water
This governs digestion and metabolism, processing of food, air and water throughout the body. The small intestine is the principal seat of Pitta in the body. Qualities are: Hot, oily, sharp, acidic, fluid and intense nature. Body build is strong medium stature.
Most importantly Pitta likes:
- Cool environments
- Sweet, bitter, astringent tastes
- Enjoying and looking at natural beauty
- Regular mealtimes especially lunch.
When in balance – Pitta has strong digestion, is warm loving and contented, enjoys challenges and intellectual stimulation.
KAPHA
Elements:
- Earth
- Water
This governs structure and cohesion such as fluid balance, muscle, fat, bone and sinew. The chest is the principal seat of Kapha in the body. Qualities are: Heavy, solid, cold, soft, sweet, steady moist and slow by nature. Body build is large solid stature.
Most importantly Kapha likes:
- Vigorous regular exercise
- Pungent, bitter, astringent tastes
- Warm, light foods.
When in balance – Kapha is affectionate, compassionate, forgiving, relaxed, emotionally steady, slow and methodical.
Most of us are a combination of these, but is it useful to know which type you are predominantly so that you can give your body what it needs to flourish.
